What Is CCNP ENCOR?
A plain-language breakdown of what the 350-401 ENCOR exam actually certifies, who it's for, and how it relates to full CCNP.
The short version
CCNP Enterprise Core (ENCOR, exam 350-401) is Cisco's professional-level enterprise exam — the one where "can configure it" quietly becomes "can configure it, defend the design, and explain exactly why it broke." Pass it alone and you already hold the standalone Cisco Certified Specialist — Enterprise Core credential; pair it with one concentration exam (ENARSI, most commonly) and you've got full CCNP Enterprise.
It's also the gatekeeper exam for CCIE Enterprise — no sitting that lab without 350-401 in hand first. Same general territory as CCNA (architecture, routing, security, automation) but noticeably deeper everywhere: multiarea OSPF and BGP instead of single-area, real virtualization and multicast, professional depth instead of associate-level breadth.
Who it's actually for
CCNA holders ready to move from "can configure and verify" to "can design and troubleshoot at enterprise scale."
Working network engineers whose job already touches BGP, multiarea OSPF, or automation tooling and want the credential to match.
Anyone whose eventual target is CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure — ENCOR is the mandatory first step, not an optional detour.
What the exam covers
Prerequisites
Nothing stops you at registration — Cisco won't check. ENCOR will, on the first hard question. It assumes CCNA-level fluency with VLANs, single-area OSPF, ACLs, and troubleshooting walking in the door, whether or not you actually have it.
Honest self-check: if you can't explain longest-prefix match or an OSPF adjacency state without pausing to look it up, that's unfinished CCNA business — not something ENCOR is going to patch for you along the way.
Where to actually start
Work the blueprint in order, and give Infrastructure the extra time its 30% weight demands — it's the single biggest domain by a wide margin, and shortchanging it shows up on exam day.
Every lab's break/fix step is mandatory, not a bonus round. ENCOR is built to test whether you can diagnose a problem from the evidence in front of you — not whether you memorized the syntax that would have prevented it.
