IPv6 Compression & Scope Tricks

Expand, compress, classify, and troubleshoot IPv6 addresses without guessing.

Compression

Remove leading zeros within each hextet.

Replace one longest consecutive run of zero hextets with ::.

Use :: only once. Keep trailing significant zeros.

Expansion

Count the written hextets.

Insert enough 0000 groups at :: to reach eight hextets.

Pad each hextet to four hexadecimal digits.

Why scope matters

A link-local address works only on the local link and is automatically present on IPv6-enabled interfaces. Routers use it for important neighbor and routing operations.

A global unicast address is intended for routed communication. Unique-local space is private-like addressing but is not a direct IPv6 replacement for every IPv4 NAT design.

Multicast replaces many broadcast-dependent behaviors. IPv6 has no broadcast address.
