IPv6 Cheat Sheet

Notation, compression, prefix math, address types, configuration, and verification.

Compression rules

  1. Write eight hextets when fully expanded.
  2. Remove leading zeros inside each hextet.
  3. Replace one longest consecutive run of zero hextets with ::.
  4. Never use :: more than once.
  5. Never remove trailing significant zeros.

Common types

2000::/3 global unicast

fc00::/7 unique local

fe80::/10 link-local

ff00::/8 multicast

::1/128 loopback

Prefix anchors

/48 common site allocation boundary

/64 standard LAN prefix

/128 one specific address

One hextet = 16 bits

One hex digit = 4 bits

No IPv6 broadcast

IPv6 uses multicast and Neighbor Discovery.

ff02::1 all nodes

ff02::2 all routers

Link-local addresses are required for important local control functions.
